Two books on the same general subject, both multi-authored and each containing an interesting historical essay by the late Franz Alexander, have otherwise little in common. New Dimensions in Psychosomatic Medicine is a collection of new contributions mainly by psychiatrists, but addressed to practitioners in all medical fields.

Alexander not only gives a historical review but also Author: Marjorie C. Meehan. Though this collection of articles edited by Charles William Wahl is titled New Dimensions in Psychosomatic Medicine, it contains little that is truly "new." This book emphasizes the consideration of the patient as a whole, not as a fragmented set of symptoms arbitrarily divided into the either/or categories of functional and organic.

The book consists of a series of 13 short essays based largely on the authors' personal experiences and beliefs. The essays are easy to read. The writing is better than in the majority of medical books I have read.
